“Intelligent” “dance” “music” (commonly IDM) is a genre name invented by the creators of an online mailing list to describe dance music of the 1980s and early 1990s which uses unusual and “weird” sounds, defies rhythmic convention, and is much harder to dance to than most forms of electronica. Intelligent Dance Music was originally applied to musicians like Leftfield, The Future Sound of London, The Orb, Orbital, Aphex Twin, The Black Dog, and B12. However, many artists disagree with this label and simply call their own tracks electronic music. Aphex Twin’s Rephlex Records prefers to use the term braindance, or names of already existing genres such as acid house and drum and bass.

Yeah, it was quite a while ago now I suppose. :P The label was really just a way to split the terrible cheesy/chart dance stuff like Technotronic from the good stuff such as Aphex Twin. I don't think it was intended to stick and certainly not to morph into "intelligent dance" and "intelligent drum 'n' bass" and such..

To me it seems like IDM is actually two genres sharing a common name. On one side you have artists like Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Squarepusher, Autechre and related artists that generally play fast drummy music that melts your brain, then you have the ambient, progressive, quieter side of IDM which are artists like múm, Boards of Canada, ISAN, Ulrich Schnauss and stuff. They're so different, I don't understand why they're both called IDM.
