  • My Music Week in Review 11/10/08

    10 Nov 2008, 22:30 by DeuceMckenzie

My second wave of Elephant 6 exploration continued this week. In fact, if not for my yourmusic.com, my purchases would have been exclusive to the collective.

    Album: Can't Wait Another Day
    Artist: The Ladybug Transistor
    Released: 2007
    Acquired Via: City Lights (CD)

Some time ago, a poster at rateyourmusic.com recommended The Albemarle Sound to me based on my love of the E6 extended family band, The Essex Green. Both groups definitely belong to more mellow, melodic branch of the collective, but that is really where the similarities end. The Ladybug Transistor actually remind me more of The Magnetic Fields than anyone else. The same strange upbeat/depressive feeling that instantly makes me think of antidepressant medications for some reason. TLT's latest effort is nowhere near the quality of the first record I bought by them, but it has some great tracks. I especially like Here Comes the Rain, a great little pop gem. I must say that the production on this album is surprisingly slick for an E6 related act, but it suits the material. Rating: 3/5 Stars

    Album: Presents: Singles and Beyond
    Artist: The Olivia Tremor Control
    Released: 2000
    Acquired Via: Emusic

The Olivia Tremor Control are probably my favorite band of the last 15 years. The two albums they produced in a very brief but memorable career are among my favorites of all time. The singles and rarities package that fills out the picture with the remaining major tracks not included on the two full-length efforts, has been out of print some time. Finally, the collection has returned to the Emusic store and I downloaded it the second I saw it on the site. It is striking to see how different the band was on the singles and EPs release prior to 1995's Dusk In Cubist Castle. The opening track, PlayLove Athena sounds more like a fuzzy version of fellow E6 act, The Apples in Stereo. Few of the tracks on the compilation never reach the brilliant balance of pop hooks and experimental passages found on the two LPs, and generally speaking this is not a release of the same quality of those two works. That said, it is still a vital piece of the OTC picture I am glad to have in my possession. Rating: 3/5 Stars

    Album: Seniors and Juniors
    Artist: The Marshmallow Coast
    Released: 1999
    Acquired Via: Emusic

This is some weird stuff. I have a feeling that it is going to take time to process this eccentric bit of bedroom pop. The album reminds me of a far more mellow version of Cherry Peel. I know that this "band" has personnel links to the original version of of Montreal, and would seem to owe a great debt to the lo-fi pop stylings of Kevin Barnes early years. I need more time with this one, but I'm really starting to dig it. Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

    Album: Songs for the Deaf
Artist: Queens of the Stone Age
    Released: 2002
    Acquired Via: YourMusic Queue Shipment

I first added this album to my wishlist in 2003. For one reason or another I never got around to buying it until now. A pretty solid hard rock album, that has only one major flaw. Whoever decided to add those cheesy radio bumper inserts marred the whole experience for me. I would love to hear this record without all that garbage in between songs. Rating: 3/5 Stars

  • How I got into My top 50 artists

    22 May 2008, 00:18 by Celewen2931

This is mostly to waste ridiculous amounts of time. Because that is what I do best. :)

    1. Sleater-Kinney: I got into them through a friend. At first listen I wasn't into it. I left it in my cd collection for a couple months. One day when I was organizing it, I found it and thought I would give it another listen. I fell in love with it right away. I freaking love Sleater-Kinney to pieces. their music helped me through a lot of things.

2.Kimya Dawson:I believe the only reason I got through this last year of school is because of Kimya Dawson. I got into her through a friend and when I first listened to her, I wanted to cry because someone else got this thing called life.I know It sounds so cliched and weird. I usually don't have that kind of reaction to music. I mean, it effects me but it doesn't make me cry. I really love Kimya Dawson. She's freaking awesome. her music means so much to me.

    3. Cat Power: I used to be really into launchcast and I was listening to my station one day and she came on. I loved it right away and I've been listening to her ever since.

    4. The Beatles: Dude. it's The Beatles. What more can I say about them? Except that we all know how much they rule. Next band.

5.Yeah Yeah Yeahs: I happened upon them randomly. They are addictive, like drugs or jolli rancher lollipops.

    6. They Might Be Giants: My dad used to play them for me when I was little. I feel like I grew up with them. They will always hold a special place in my heart, what with their they might be giantness.

7.Camera Obscura: I got into them because of their name. I thought it was cool so I looked it up and I found an incredibly awesome indie band. yay!

8.Belle and Sebastian: People told me they were good. and they were right.

    9. PJ Harvey: I got into her through my dad who has the biggest cd collection out of all the people I know and will ever meet. PJ Harvey is made entirely of win and awesome.

    10. The Moldy Peaches: I got into them through the same friend that got me into Kimya Dawson. They are great. if you've heard of them, it was probably through juno and you most definitely check out the rest of their stuff. All of it is good.

    11. Patti Smith: Why is she so far down? when did this happen? Patti Smith is a true rock n'roll poet. Her music is incredible. I saw her in concert. It was quite amazing. I got into her through my desire to know more about classic 77 punk.

    12. The Clash: another artist that is too far down. I love The Clash. I got into them the same way as Patti Smith.

    13. The Donnas: They are a party band. I got into them because I wanted to party.

    14. ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION: awesome japanese band. I got in them through Full Metal Alchemist. They did a theme song for the show and I really liked it. I looked it up and found them.

    15. Le Tigre: got into them because they are similar to Sleater-Kinney. Though they are an electronic band.

    16. The Kinks: I got into them through my dad. When I first got my ipod, I didn't have a computer that was just mine to use, so i used the family computer which had all of my dad's music. I took a lot of it off but I keep a lot of it too. I kept The Kinks.

17.Guster: I discovered them through another friend. She told me I had to listen to them because they were so awesome. And they are. I burned all of their stuff from her and I listen to them now too.

    18. The Seatbelts: I got into them through Cowboy Bebop. They do all the music for that show. They are incredible. They have a lot of different musical styles and they blend them together so well.

    19. The Smiths: Another band I kept from my dad's music collection. I <3 the Smiths.

    20. Lily Allen: I checked it out of the library on a whim, thinking it would be stupid. Surprisingly, It wasn't.

    21. CSS: I got into them through that ipod commercial. I had heard of them before but never really listened to them. pretty cool.

    22. Feist: my dad got me one of her cds for my birthday last year. I really liked it.

    23. Tegan and Sara: I picked them up at the library on a whim. They were really good.

    24. The Ditty Bops: I heard that song "Wishful Thinking" and thought it was adorable.

    25. Sean Paul: he was a result of my sophomore year at college. A lot of my friends liked him.

    26. The Cramps: another result of wanting to listen to classic 77 punk.

    27. The Essex Green: I saw Camera Obscura in concert and they opened for them. they were really good.

28.AFI: I got into them through some friends. They gave me some songs and after a few listens I really liked it.

    29. R.E.M.: I feel like I grew up with the m too. My dad's favorite band.

30.The Charms: random recommendation from my dad

    31. Yann Tiersen: his beautiful music for Amelie. I love Amelie. It is my favorite movie.

    32. The Velvet Underground: I found them when I found Patti Smith etc. I love them ridiculously.

33.The Fratellis: I was driving with my dad and he played it in the car.

34.Etta James: a random choice of mine. I was looking for something different.

35.Flogging Molly: i went to a writing class and we were listening to music to inspire us and whatnot. Somebody played Flogging Molly and I thought it was good.

36.The Cure:I love The Cure. I don't know why they are so far down here. I started listening to them in high school and I have been ever since. I just saw them in concert a week or two ago and they were kick ass.

    37. Bob Dylan: I got into him through a combination of my dad and a friend of mine

38.HorrorPops: random choice while I was in a cd store.

39.Spice Girls: left over from elementary school. I think my mom bought me one of their cds. They were the first band I was ever into.

    40. Echobelly: One of the first decent bands I started listening to once i got out of my shitty music phase in middle school. a recommendation from my dad.

    41. TLC: also from when I was younger. I still like them. I'm weird.

    42. X-Ray Spex: another 77 punk band. I heart them so much.

    43. Zombina & The Skeletones: random choice

None. And only one in mp3. It's really hard to find, if someone have something of Kâzım Koyuncu, please send to me. He's my favorite turkish singer (and unfortunately he's dead already)

There's a lot of things that I don't listen on PC (specially classic and ethnic music), because every CD I buy, I delete it from the computer. So my last.fm charts are not reliable. A big part of my favorite albums I have on CD, and I play them mostly in my car.
But the top track chart is trustworthy, though.
And I don't know why I answered this in english. I think I was just lazy to translate the questions.
    =*** to all.

  • Top 50 artist meme

    11 May 2008, 22:40 by benfergy

Top 50 meme (I assume this is the top 50 scrobbled artists overall when I found this)

    1. How did you get into 29? (Tie at 28: Stevie Wonder and The Divine Comedy)
Stevie Wonder I've been familiar with as a teenage listening to oldies radio. With the Divine Comedy, I can't quite pinpoint the instance I've started listening, but I first heard of them by listening to their music online. Probably in 2006.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Snow Patrol)
PlayRun, or maybe PlaySpitting Games. No, I'm pretty sure it's Run.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Three-way tie at 31: Aberfeldy, The Moody Blues, and The Velvelettes)

Of all the songs of all these artists:

The spoken words at the end of PlayNights in White Satin:
"Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
    And which is an illusion"

    4. How did you get into 49? (sigh... another three way tie, at 47: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Mates of State, and Harvey Danger)
Oldies Radio, a mix tape from a friend of mine, and the internet.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Dusty Springfield)
Surprisingly none, but I do want to get Dusty In Memphis sometime. Preferably the extended edition.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (The Essex Green)
My stats say New Orleans, but the one I've enjoyed more is the very catchy and lyrically interesting PlayOur Lady In Havana.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (yet another three way tie, at 37: The Spinners, Phish, and Rufus Wainwright, three artists probably never uttered in the same sentence before!)

Surprisingly, no. There's probably a Rufus Wainwright song out there that I haven't listened to yet that will, though.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Taylor Hicks)
Hmm, would that include his Idol performances, or just his originals. Actually, never mind, even if the former are included, his best ever will have to be his rendition of Georgia on My Mind.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Super Furry Animals)
Tough one, but it'd probably be Slow Life.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (The Beatles)
Oh, certainly. I think just about any song on Abbey Road will do just that.

    11. What is the worst song by 40? (Martha Reeves & The Vandellas)
Speaking of Abbey Road, the song Something was covered by Martha and the Vandellas, and it was a very trite, almost emotionless version of an amazing song, so this would have to be their worst.

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Yes)
PlayAnd You and I. This may actually be one of the best pieces of music ever written.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Summer Hymns)
Seeing them live at a bar in Madison and hearing their live performance of Pity and Envy.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (back to the combo of The Spinners, Phish, and Rufus Wainwright)

    Spinners: Probably It's a Shame.
    Phish: Divided Sky
    Rufus Wainwright: Either Play
