My mid-year review of 2008 releases
28 Aug 2008, 03:26 by FinalPizzaHut
Alright, so we're well past the halfway mark of 2008, and while it's a bit early for me to start making a top 20, I still like to make a journal of all the releases I've heard in a year, to keep track of them for myself, and hopefully to help someone else find something good. This will be updated on pretty much a daily basis, as I have a substantial backlog of music that I have yet to really piece together my thoughts on, or to even listen to at all. Also, I encourage recommendations, and nothing is off limits, so don't be afraid to toss something out there!
Oh, and feel free to let me know if I should perhaps re-evaluate some of these albums. Sometimes really great material can get lost in the mix, and I'm sure I'll be periodically changing some of these ratings as it is.
Italicized text indicated album ratings added at last update.
Bold text indicates albums that should be picked up pretty much no matter what. Note that these are not necessarily the albums with the highest scores, but ones that have stood out as something special. These are the best of the best.

Scarlett Johansson - Anywhere I Lay My Head

My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges

Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs

"Dibder" - Music From The Motion Picture
12 Aug 2008, 11:55 by CvaldaVessalis
Though I have indulged in this iTunes shuffling fandango previously since my introduction to all things last.fm, and even submitted my very own rom-com soundtrack as a 70-minute playlist (which proved to be even more annoying than I realized, seeing as I was getting annoyed with good songs as opposed to Working Title/Hollywood standards or overplayed chart hits this time around). In any event, I decided that, if I were to try this soundtrack-shuffling exercise one more time, a little refinement in my shuffle technique needed to be put in order. Firstly, only five-star songs from my library would constitute this CD-long roster, so as to make sure that consistency wouldn't be compromised this time around. Secondly, I am keen to propose that life doesn't necessarily constitute a set list of key rites of passage (Wedding? Birth of child?? Waking up!?!), so, as per my present life experience and my own pre-supposed life trajectory, I have established new criteria for each soundtrack cue. Thirdly, given my last.fm friend Popicn's ridiculously appropriate playlist, I am guessing it's OK to cheat on this playlist just a little...? Forgive me, this is how much time I have to myself at work...!
Just for reference, the title refers to my karaoke pseudonym during the last three years of my young and carefree life wherein I was allowed to be a dirty little stop-out and be privy to all kinds of illicit goings-on without recrimination or condescension from loved ones and friends... or, to put too fine a point on it all, my university years! Those years where you didn't feel self-aware when chatting bullshit about international relations, half-baked semi-religious philosophies, the responsibilities that leading powers of the world have for more impoverished nations and the resulting exploitation on both sides of the argument or how pissed off you were that your favorite singer always gets voted off halfway through The X Factor... That lovely time when becoming a professional and "five year plans" were the least of your worries. Though some of the cues on this list were composed and released after my graduation, they still remind of one of the best times of my life. This is dedicated to Deborah, James, Jessie, Richard and Rob, my housemates on Brading Road for two years, and five people I really need to spend some time catching up with:

bilan musical mid 2008
30 Jul 2008, 19:47 by _g
ALLEE JE ME LANCE !
Surprises mid-2008
___ # 雅-miyavi- - THIS IZ THE JAPANESE KABUKI ROCK: Plus sa garde robe se dégrade, plus sa musique devient intéressante… Bizarre.
___ # The Gossip – Standing In The Way Of Control : Enorme.
___ # J – URGE : Puissant, punk, rock, sueur, testostérone, hombre…
___ # The Kills – Midnight Boom : Il m’a fallu 30 secondes chrono pour adorifier cet album.
Juste magnifique.
Spoiled Rich Girls and B-List Actresses
20 Jul 2008, 19:39 by lostmyway
I've noticed a growing trend in Hollywood between spoiled little rich girls and B-list actresses. That trend... releasing an album. Just off the top of my head... Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson, Brooke Hogan, Heidi Montag, and now... Hayden Panettiere. Why oh Why do these chicks think that just because they can act (not really... but whatever), or have a rich relative or were on some Vh1 reality show, they think they can sing too? It doesn't work that way. Not one of them has released anything that would be considered good by... well, anyone.
Another thing that grinds my gears (channeling Peter Griffin here), is when Britney Spears is grouped in with them. Now I don't mean to sound all Chris Crocker-ish here, but Britney Spears has been working since the early 90's. She has worked more than these chicks have ever even dreamed of, and it's noticeable from the roughly 18 million scrobble difference between Britney and the rest of them.
This also applies to musicians who think they are actors. I'm so sick of seeing artists who just put out a debut album quoted as saying "Well... now I want to try acting!" Yes, because after a week of releasing your debut album... you've already conquered all that can be in the music world.
Sorry, I just had to get this mini-rant out. -
