If i remember right, Am Universum doesn't have any growls either. Still every single album has their own personal atmosphere, i like all of them - from the very first to their latest.

The Album "Far From The Sun" is completely without Growls, i think. And it is as good as with Growls, like on "Silent Water".

GenesisRisen wrote:
I don't think they've released any albums without any death growls. And silent waters and eclipse both have a few tracks that have some strong melodeath influences.

omg, I like figured out yesterday that i never listened Amorphis, but i've come across it few times. ... and yes, this sounds fucking amazing. I love new and melodic albums without death growls... although whole discography sounds nice.

I just listened to Tales and have to say it is great, only thing being that it could have used a bit of more production. It seems like they improved that a bit on Elegy but the music wasn't as interesting. I'd say Tales = Silent Waters > Elegy from what I've heard. I had to try the different albums first to get a better feel of their material as a whole, so now I wonder where to go...

Z_ZY wrote:
Tales fucking great! Best their album ever. With Pasi they created magic music... But with Joutsen... level was down... not voice, music.

If you like Pasi's growls, try Shape of Despair (especially Angels of Distress). That stuff is just awesome, and once again shows how talented he is.

Adalgra wrote:
Pasi Koskinen and Joutsen are totally different musicians. I agree, that comparing them is quite impossible.. Both hawe their better sides as singers. Still Pasi is definitely more like himself in Ajattara, I think. And he can also be more indepented in songwriting there.
-
Memor wrote:
GenesisRisen, I have to disagree with Koskinen being inferior to Joutsen. He is great, and not easy to be compared with Joutsen, but he fits well in the Elegy-FftS -era. Koivusaari isn't a very good growler, I'll give you that, but his voice fits those albums well.

I love how these guys progressed in their music over the years, Starting from pure Death Metal to Progressive/Melodic Rock/Metal. Makes them very unique and special to me.

GenesisRisen wrote:
Memor summed it up pretty well. Karelian Isthus is death with a little doom, Thousand Lakes is oldschool doom/death, Elegy is where they started getting prog, still some melodeath hanging out. Their albums till Eclipse are mostly less heavy prog, although Tuonela is more doom than the others. If you like Silent Waters, just get Eclipse first. The old clean vocalist sounds nothing like Joutsen, and the old growls were quite a bit more gutteral.

i fucking love this hell of a band, can't wait for their new album!

Memor wrote:
Floydisgod, practice caution when delving into Amorphis's discography. The stuff is really diverse. If you liked Silent Waters, the album closest to that in style is Eclipse, with the same singer and stylistically being pretty similar. Tales from the Thousand Lakes and Elegy come in next when thinking about similarity, but they are from a totally different world. The singer(s) are different too. To stay within the heavy line, there's only The Karelian Isthmus left, but that is already more straightforward death metal, not as melodic as their two next albums (Tales & Elegy). But if you would rather take some rocking and more soft stuff, then Tuonela, Am Universum and Far from the Sun are great picks, especially the first two.

i think hes just saying that metal is a terrible tag, melodic death metal being the better one for example. anyway I dont know why i haven't listened to this band until now, Silent Waters is a damn good album I need to check out some of their earlier stuff I think any particular suggestions I was thinking Tales...

While it shouldn't be the first, as most of their material is prog, with varying influence from melodeath, their first two albums were death.
