It's Been 2 Years

  • It's Been 2 Years

Off and on for nearly 2 years now I've attempted to get Last.FM to work. Here is the inital problem:

When I opening up last.fm to play I got an error message telling me

"Something is seriously wrong with your network subsystem. The application failed to open a socket and start listening for submissions from player plugins

Details: Could Not Start Listening on Socket. Socket error: 10022."

In those exact words. So I did a little hunting and Socket Error 10022 was some generic error message, apparently. So I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it.

When I did this, not only did it continue to give me the socket erroe 10022, but the Wizard also informed me it couldn't connect to the internet. So now I cannot even fully instal it.

Some people suggest it may be my firewall, but here is the problem. I am not sure if I have any firewalls and if I do, where they are located.

I know there is a Windows Firewall, and when I go into the control panel it tells me that it's OFF, but when I go to Security Center it tells me at it's ON. So I went to Window Securty and told it to allow Lastfm.exe.

That being done, I went to my Internet Security options and added last.fm to my Trusted Sites list and gave it as much access and I know how.

What I would like to know is, is this an issue with a firewall or what, and what can I do to fix this? Any help from anyone would be appreciated after all this time and please be specific. I'm a little dense when it comes to my computer's settings.

    Thank you.

    Go to Start->Run...

    Type services.msc
    Click OK

Look for "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)"

    Double-click it.

    Click Stop button.

On the "Startup type:" drop-down list, choose "Disabled", OK.

There's also some other 3rd party firewall that's known to break the client with its default configuration. Can't remember the name right now, but I remember it has something to do with disabling parental controls.
  • Fulvian, I've done that and when I go to the Wizard it still gives me the same error message.

This computer comes with McAffee, could that be blocking it?
  • Very likely McAffee has its own antivirus running. And that is why windows security center tells you a firewall is on even if the windows one is turned off.

I don't know much about McAffee configuration but i'm pretty sure you can try to find how to access its firewall settings using the help section of the software.
And eventually having some friend more tech savvy helping you to configure it properly later on.
