Valery Gergiev conductor
London Symphony Orchestra
As Rachmaninoff developed a reputation as a virtuoso pianist, he increasingly attracted invitations to perform abroad. In 1909 he made his American debut, premiering his fearsomely testing third piano concerto in New York. Three years previously, it was anxiety about the growing political unrest in Russia that prompted a temporary move to Dresden in Germany in 1906, where he composed his sumptuous and lyrical second symphony (which was premiered in St Petersburg in 1908).
